The day of an impending winter storm may not seem like the most likely time to talk about tree planting, but that's what I'm going to do! As some of you may know, I'm a huge proponent of sustainable landscapes generally and trees in particular. Trees are amazing additions to our cities for many reasons; they add beauty to our landscapes, the provide habitat for birds and bugs, they can reduce our cooling bills in the summer (shade people!), and they are great at sucking carbon out of the air. Unfortunately, not all the neighborhoods in Madison have equal benefit from these great natural phenoms. Luckily, there is an organization out there that works to rectify that...the Urban Tree Alliance. Through their program, the Madison Canopy Project, they offer free trees (including installation!) to residents of 18 Madison neighborhoods. The goal: to create a healthy and resilient urban forest.
When we lived in Eastmorland, we took advantage of this program to add a tree to our landscape. The process was simple and easy. Highly recommended!
