Each year, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) releases the City Clean Energy Scorecard. The scorecard analyzes cities across the country's efforts to implement energy efficiency policies and adoption of renewable energy technology. The scorecard ranks cities on the following 5 policy areas:
1. Local government operations
2. Community-wide initiatives
3. Buildings policies
4. Energy and water utilities
5. Transportation policies
New York City made the top of the list this year, with St. Paul and St. Louis ranking as most-improved. How did Madison and Milwaukee fare? Milwaukee improved 8 spots to 36, while Madison is lagging at 64. Both cities are hampered by Wisconsin's builidng codes, which make it difficult to implement energy efficient building standards. Madison, though, has significant areas in which it can improve, including in areas of local government operations and equity-driven community initiatives.
